The wonderful and colourful world of Beryl

Beryl is a fascinating and diverse family of gemstones, renowned for its array of stunning colours and its significance in jewellery making. This mineral family includes some of the most beloved gemstones, such as aquamarine, morganite, and emerald, each with its unique hue and allure. Beryl gemstones are treasured for their beauty, rarity, and the elegance they bring to any piece of jewellery.

Aquamarine

Aquamarine, with its serene blue colour reminiscent of the sea, is perhaps the most famous beryl after emerald. The colour ranges from a light pastel blue to a deep sea blue, often enhanced through heat treatment to remove greenish tones. Aquamarine is associated with tranquillity, serenity, and clarity, making it a popular choice for engagement rings and other fine jewellery. It symbolises the purity of crystalline waters and the exhilaration and relaxation of the sea.

Morganite

Morganite is prized for its soft pink to peach colours, attributed to traces of manganese. Since its discovery in the early 20th century, it has become increasingly popular, especially for engagement rings, due to its subtle, romantic hue. Morganite embodies tenderness and compassion and is often associated with heart energy and love. Its gentle colour complements a wide range of skin tones, making it a versatile choice for jewellery.

Emerald

Emerald is the most valued variety of beryl, famous for its vibrant green colour, which is due to the presence of chromium and sometimes vanadium. The intense green of emerald has been synonymous with beauty and rarity for thousands of years, making it one of the most coveted gemstones. Emeralds often contain inclusions and fissures, referred to as "jardin," which are considered part of their character. Despite their inclusions, high-quality emeralds can reach extraordinary prices, especially when they display a deep, vivid green. Emeralds are a symbol of rebirth, fertility, and love.

Care and Maintenance

While beryl gemstones are relatively hard and durable, they require careful handling to maintain their beauty. Emerald, in particular, due to its natural inclusions, is more prone to damage. It is advisable to clean beryl gemstones using warm soapy water and a soft brush, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners, especially for emeralds. Storing them separately from harder gemstones will help prevent scratches.
