8 questions with Photographer Rachel Humphrey

Showcasing like-minded business owners who love gemstones and appreciate great design!

Tell me a little about your business and what its purpose is

I am a professional photographer of over 10 years with a broad range of experience. In recent years, I have turned my attention to specialising in Personal Brand Photography, which I absolutely love.

My purpose is to help female entrepreneurs to become the face of their brand; to show who they are and what they offer through beautiful bespoke professional images.

There are so many women who feel that they are not photogenic, I help these women to see themselves in a totally different way. They not only realise that they can look great in photos but also feel empowered to show up as the face of their brand.

Can you imagine having a bank of images that represented EVERYTHING you envisaged your brand to look and feel like? Well that’s what I help them achieve.

Where did your passion for your business come from?

I’ve always loved photos, looking at them and taking them, plus I’ve always been creative so being a photographer felt very natural to me. I started with outdoor family and child photography and have met some lovely families over the years, many who I still photograph regularly. But, I have always felt there was something missing, that I needed something more.

Before photography, I was a project manager mainly working on large scale events. I loved working with people, working with brands, marketing teams and getting creative. I loved the buzz and seeing something come together.

I then discovered Personal Brand Photography, which fits me perfectly. Not only do I get to take photographs, but I get to help design a whole bank of images specifically tailored to an individual and their brand. There is a lot of pre-work and research involved, but I love getting to know other people and what they are passionate about so it makes me happy!

How have you adapted your business to the current climate?

Well much to my own surprise, like a lot of things these days, I’ve managed to go virtual! I mean, who thought virtual photoshoots would be possible!? But it is, and the results are pretty amazing. It can be limiting, but for a quick fix of photos for your business it serves its purpose well and has definitely allowed me to stay creative and adapt my work during these challenging times. I do miss meeting people in person though!

What top three tips would you give to someone looking to start their own business right now?

  1. Be yourself and stop waiting for things to be perfect! Nobody is more perfect at being you than you and imperfect action is better than no action at all!

  2. Don’t think you have to do it all at once, or that everything is set in stone. As you adapt and evolve so will your business.

  3. Mindset is everything. Believe you can do it and you will.

Do you have a favourite beauty product/find?

I really like looking for natural, cruelty free products and mainly use Arbonne or Inika products which is an Australian brand that I love. After discovering a few health issues, I’m pretty conscious about what I am putting on my skin and for years now I have tried to avoid all the nasty chemicals. I also love Coconut oil, because it’s good for so many things!

What’s your secret recipe, ingredient or tipple?

I haven’t made them for ages now as my husband mostly cooks, but I used to be the queen of Yorkshire Puddings!

I also love a glass (and then some) of New Zealand Sav Blanc, a full-bodied Australian Shiraz or a Gin and Lemon Bitters!

How would you describe your style?

Non-existent at the moment! With small children and starting my business I seem to have lost my way a bit. But I recently had a colour analysis done so hoping 2021 is the year I find my style again!

What kind of jewellery do you wear? Do you have a jewellery wish list?

Day to day I keep it fairly simple, generally wearing my hooped earrings, my mum’s wedding ring and my wedding rings. But I do love jewellery and love putting on some statement pieces for a night out.

What’s on my wish list? Well, having seen all of your stunning jewellery Jade, the green tanzanite necklace springs to mind!

Thanks Rachel, you’re absolutely right, you never need to get all your ducks in a line right from the get-go!
