Zircon gemstone ring

Introducing the sublime and durable gemstone Zircon

Don’t be confused by the name. Zircon is a natural, magnificent, and underrated gemstone that has been worn and treasured since ancient times. It’s not the same thing as cubic zirconia, which is a synthetic diamond; natural zircon is a unique and beautiful gemstone in its own right.

One of the most distinctive features of zircon is its stunning range of colours:

Blue Zircon: The most popular colour, blue zircon is often heat-treated to achieve its vibrant sky-blue to deep blue colours.

Colorless Zircon: Also known as "Matara diamond" after the city of Matara in Sri Lanka, colourless zircon is admired for its brilliance and diamond-like appearance.

Red and Pink Zircon: These colours are less common but highly prized for their deep and vibrant hues, often found in smaller sizes.

Yellow and Orange Zircon: These warm-toned zircons are appreciated for their sunny colours, offering a range of shades from soft yellows to fiery oranges.

Green Zircon: Rare and usually a result of natural radiation damage, green zircon has a unique appeal among collectors and gem enthusiasts.

Since the Middle Ages, people have believed that Zircon gemstones can induce sleep, ward off evil, and promote prosperity. It is also one of December’s birthstones (alongside Tanzanite and Turquoise.)

Caring for Zircon

Zircon is relatively hard, rating between 6.5 and 7.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, but it can be brittle and prone to chipping. Therefore, while zircon is suitable for a variety of jewellery settings, it requires some care to maintain its beauty over time. Jewellery featuring zircon should be stored separately to avoid scratches from harder stones, and it is recommended to remove zircon jewellery during strenuous activities.
