cherry chocolate zircon
Zircon: A gemstone as old as the Earth
Ah, this gemstone … I just couldn’t stop looking at it - is it brown, is is pink, is it burgundy? In the end I realised it looked a bit like cherry chocolate, so that’s how I’m describing it!
I do love a gemstone that isn’t an obvious ‘'gemmy’ colour too - there’s something alluring about wearing a gem that people have to ask about rather than assume.
It’s such an eye-catching size too - at 6.73 carats (11.8mm tall and 6.73mm wide) is creates a real statement. Instinct tells me it is going to be a ring.
And whilst my ideas started off quite traditional, they got stronger and braver until this gem felt like it could be part of a suit of armour with talon claws, sculptural metal facets and dark brown diamonds! … I’ve been thinking about Lord of the Rings a lot recently - its clearly inspiring me!
Did you know that zircon is the oldest known mineral found on Earth? Scientists have discovered zircon crystals dating back an astonishing 4.4 billion years, formed when our planet was still forming! … Just imagine that. Long before dinosaurs, before the continents as we know them, and before life itself, zircon crystals were already forming deep within our planet. And today, we have the extraordinary privilege of wearing this most ancient of minerals as a beautiful gemstone.
