Rhodolite Garnet

This beautiful Rhodolite was formed several hundred million years ago in a pegmatitic vein in Tanzania, East Africa. Heated ground waters circulated through rock fractures, dissolving minerals from the surrounding rocks and redepositing them in open spaces like fractures. Amongst these chemicals was one very important component – iron. It is this which makes Rhodolite red. It is an impurity that was formed within the garnet crystal and without it the gem would have had no colour. As the rock folded with time, the heat and pressure grew to a level where it was possible for this Rhodolite crystal to form. This remained constant for the many millions of years between that time and the time it was discovered by man. Hundreds of millions of years later this garnet crystal was chiseled from the crevice within which it had lain for so long and carried to the surface by miners in the Kangala area of Tanzania, in East Africa. From there it found its way to Nairobi. It was identified as a fine Rhodolite Garnet and cut by master cutters into what you see today. A journey of 550 million years so far ...

Caring for Garnets

Garnets have a hardness of 7-7.5 on the Mohs Scale (similar to Emerald), Gems with a hardness of 6-7 or greater are quite suitable for rings which are worn occasionally. For a ring like a wedding or engagement ring, intended for everyday wear over a period of years, a hardness rating of 8-10 is recommended. Warm, soapy water is the best method for cleaning garnets. Ultrasonic cleaners are considered safe, but are still not recommended. Steamers should be avoided, as well as any harsh household chemicals and cleaners, including bleach or hydrofluoric acid, as chemicals can cause corrosion.
